Project Evaluation & Planing for Foley

Planning
The clip we have chosen is a short 40 second clip taken from the film fearless, it involves a Kung Fu styled fight scene between two men, the fight will requires a lot of punching, kicking and blocking noise, along with some wood snapping, and swoosh noises which will be very good for using sound panning within our clip.

We have drawn up a list of the different sounds we need in advance before we go out and try achieve these sounds.
Soft punching.
Hard punching.
Swooping/Swooshing.
Fast blocking.
Slow blocking.
Kicking.
Ripping.
Wood breaking/Cracking/snapping.

We've recorded all the foley sounds listed above to use within our project including some back-up sounds incase our first choices didn't work out.
The sounds recorded and how we achieved them are listed below.

Sound 1 - Soft Punch - We achieved this sound by punching a soft book.
Sound 2 - Harder Punch - We achieved this sound by punching a soft book very hard.
Sound 3 - Ripping - We achieved this sound by ripping a piece of cloth.
Sound 4 - Swoop/Swoosh - We achieved this  sound by swinging a bamboo stick extremely hard.
Sound 5 - Ripping 2 - We achieved this sound by ripping paper to try gain a back-up ripping noise incase our first style of ripping noise wasn't accurate enough.
Sound 6 - Kicking - We achieved this noise by kicking the floor lightly, kicking a chair lightly and kicking soft props to repeatedly until we was happy with one of the sounds.
Sound 7 - Blocking - We achieved this by punching into the palms of our hands and we also recorded simple slap/hand hitting sounds incase they were needed.

Although we have only recorded 7 different sounds, we have repeated methods e.g harder/softer faster/slower in order to have a large variety of foley sounds to choose from, this allows us to potentially save future time as we will not have to re-record sounds and just simply hassle ourselves, instead we have pretty much everything we need at hand, and if some things are surplus to requirement then it doesn't matter as it is always better to be prepared for worst case scenarios and try prevent them happening, so we've definitely planned ahead extremely well. We've planned to take turns editing in order to share the work equally and achieve the best, highest quality project possible.

 Evaluation

Overal
I though that the sounds in the video Sounds that we recorded were perfect in fitting with the visuals unlike the previous foley sound work that we did we spent much more time planning and recording the sounds which is why the finished product has much more accurate sounds which are a good representation of what you would see in a Chinese Kung Foo film.

Things that could have gone better in the video

There were some sounds in our video which couldn't be made by s in real life such as the men fighting shouting and the sounds of the crowd below them. Obviously some sounds are too high budget to create or cant be done by just two people. We thought about adding some sounds from foley sound libraries but we felt that it would detract from the overall homemade feel of the video.

Things I think when well

I think we did a very good job creating sounds very similar to those found in a old style Kung Foo film such as Fist of fury or Flying eagles. The sounds we created are not very real world accurate but fit perfectly and make sense in this kind of a film. When we were recording the sounds in the first place we kept an accurate log of which sounds were recorded at what time this was very helpful when it came to post as it allowed us to find them easily and lead to a quicker edit.  Lastly I think the part that went the best was the decision to back up the sounds of punching and kicking with a I swoop sound which really gave it a much more professional feel.

Sound panning Analysis

There is only one instance of sound panning in this video which is why is is all the more effective. The sound pan is at a vital moment in the fight and theres a small amount of silence just before its executed. The sound pan os from left to right as the fighter on screen is kicking from left to right.

Conclusion

To conclude I think that is was far more successful that the previous project on foley sound and the factor that made it better was that we had much more time to record the sounds and much more time to edit.  I thought the sounds we created were prefect for the video and I think that
